What Is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

In vitro fertilization is a process of fertilization where a mature egg is combined with sperm outside the body (in vitro). 

The process involves monitoring and stimulating, a woman’s ambulatory process an ovum or ova from her ovaries and letting sperm fertilize them in a liquid in the lab. Then the fertilized egg (embryo) or eggs (embryos) are transferred to a uterus, where incubation takes place until the IVF cycle is complete. 

One full cycle of IVF takes about 3 weeks. Sometimes these steps are split into different parts which make the process take longer.

IVF is done to get a woman to become pregnant. IVF has been useful in addressing infertility challenges of many people, including the advanced age of the woman (advanced matured age), damaged or blocked fallopian tubes, etc.

  • People with gender disorders
  • Women with conditions that can hinder pregnancy or safe carriage of the fetus to delivery such as fibroids, fallopian tube blockage or damage, endometriosis, etc.
  • Men with sperm problems such as impaired sperm function, low count, or no sperm.

The NICE guideline says that women aged 40 to 42 should be offered 1 cycle of IVF on the National Health Service (NHS) if all of the following criteria are met:

  1. They have been trying to get pregnant through regular unprotected sex for 2 years.
  2. They have not been able to get pregnant after 12 cycles of artificial insemination.

Cost of IVF Treatment in Nigeria

The cost of in vitro fertilization in Nigeria depends on the IVF facility used, the number of eggs taken for fertilization, the type of IVF, etc.

There are 45 IVF centers in Nigeria (5 are public owned and the rest are privately owned clinics) and these clinics give their prices differently. However, the cost is estimated to be within the range of $3000 to $6000.
