[lwptoc]

WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS?

Endometriosis is an often painful disorder in which tissues that normally lines inside of the uterus called endometrium, grows outside the uterus. Organs which endometrium may commonly grow to are mostly the ovaries, fallopian tubes, of the intestine. Endometriosis can lead to weight gain.

WHAT IS POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME (PCOS)?

PCOS is a hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges. Women with PCOS produce too much insulin, or the insulin they produce does not work the way it should. Women with this condition therefore tend to gain weight because of the inability of insulin to function normally. In some people, however, PCOS develops later on as a result of substantial weight gain.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT/LOSS WITH ENDOMETRIOSIS AND POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME (PCOS)

Women with endometriosis and PCOS are faced with the serious challenge of weight gain. This poses a serious concern that can result in intimidation and frustration. Let’s review some causes of overweight as regards these two disorders – endometriosis and PCOS. These causes include:

  • Bloating And Fluid Retention

This does not cause the body to gain fat, but it can make a person look and feel heavier. Bloating can affect cloth fitting on your body.

  • Estrogen

Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent disease. Estrogen dominance causes a gain in weight.

  • Endometriosis Medications

A synthetic form of the hormone progesterone is one of the most effective treatments for endometriosis. Many women experience weight gain with progesterone.

  • Pains

Pains from endometriosis and PCOS are enough to make it difficult for a woman to exercise or stay active. This inactivity over time can cause her overweight.

  • Hormonal Imbalance/Insulin Resistance

Hormonal imbalance and insulin resistance associated with PCOS can cause overweight.

To check overweight related to endometriosis and PCOS, the following methods can be adopted:

  • Use of supplements

Several supplements may help reduce weight. Supplements like Myo-inositol and carnitine are helpful to reduce weight and cortisol symptoms.

Surgery (Bariatric)

Weight reduction can be performed through surgical procedures. Currently, there are 3 types of weight loss (bariatric) surgeries. They are:

  • Gastric bypass

The surgeon attaches a pouch to the stomach which bypasses the stomach and sends food directly into the small intestine.

  • Gastric banding

This involves a surgeon placing an adjustable silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach. This procedure can adjust the amount of food a person’s stomach can hold.

  • Sleeve gastrectomy

This involves a surgeon removing 80 to 85% of the stomach, then stapling the remaining stomach together. This helps reduce the amount of food you can consume.
