Heart – Cardiovascular

The heart is a special muscular organ positioned behind and to the left of the sternum (breastbone). The heart pumps and supplies to the entire body through a network of veins and arteries referred to as the cardiovascular system. The heart has four chambers which are categorized into two:

The upper chamber comprises the right and the left atria.

The lower chamber is composed of the left and right ventricles.

The right atrium carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the right ventricle, which takes it to the lungs. Then the oxygenated blood is carried from the lungs to the left atrium, which pumps to the left ventricle and then the left ventricle carries the blood to the rest of the body.

Conditions of the Heart

Myocardial Infarction: This is the medical term for heart attack. It is a life-threatening medical emergency in which the heart muscles start to die due to a lack of or insufficient blood supply.

Cardiac arrest: This is a sudden stop in the functioning of the heart.

Myocarditis: This is a condition in which the heart muscle and myocardium nuggets are inflamed, thus, reducing the rate with which the heart pumps blood.

Pericarditis: This is the inflammation of the heart’s outer lining, the pericardium. It results in sharp pain in the chest.

Congestive heart failure: This is a condition in which the heart becomes weak and cannot pump blood effectively.

Arrhythmia: This occurs when there is an abnormal change in the rate with which the heart beats.
